Mirjam Sutter ist freischaffende Tänzerin, Choreografin und Pädagogin. Nach ihrer Ausbildung zur Lehrerin im Ballettzentrum Gerda von Arb (russischer Stil, Vaganova) zog sie nach Genua (Italien) und war drei Jahre lang Mitglied der Kompanie Kaleidodanse unter der Leitung der ehemaligen Tänzer*innen Redha Benteifour (Paris), Giovanna la Vecchia und Dario Greco (Genua).
Zurück in der Schweiz und als zeitgenössische Tänzerin studierte sie Orientalischen Tanz und war 7 Jahre lang Tänzerin der ägyptischen Folklore Tanzgruppe von Khaled Seif in Zürich. Im Jahr 2016 absolvierte sie die AATEC-Ausbildung der Orientalischen Tänzerin Nesma Al-Andalus und schloss sie mit einem Diplom ab. Mirjam Sutter ist eine aktive Verfechterin der Fortführung der traditionellen Formen des orientalischen Tanzes und arbeitet an einer eigenen Sprache des zeitgenössischen Tanzes, die moderne Techniken mit dem Tanzvokabular des Mittleren Ostens und Nordafrikas verschmilzt.
Seit vielen Jahren vermittelt und präsentiert sie ihre künstlerische Arbeit (Aux Frontières 2007, En Mer 2011, Ben Ali Street 2012, The Dice Player 2013, Birds over no man's Land 2014, Entre Deux 2016, Entre Deux – Solo Version 2018). Ihr künstlerisches Interesse findet sich nicht nur in der Kultur des Nahen Ostens, sondern auch in ihren eigenen Schweizer Wurzeln. 2016 kreiert Mirjam in Zusammenarbeit mit Elena Morena Weber Spuren, ein Stück, das von alpinen Schweizer Winter-Ritualen inspiriert ist. Es folgt eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Schweizerischen Trachtenverein, für die Erforschung innovativer Ansätze im Schweizer Volkstanz.
Seit 2010 wird sie regelmäßig nach Palästina eingeladen, wo sie verschiedene Tanz- und Theatergruppen im Westjordanland und im Gazastreifen unterrichtet und künstlerische Projekte leitet (Al-Harah-Theater, Beit Djalah; Theatre Day Production, Gaza-Stadt; El-Funoun Dance Company, Ramallah; Baladi Folklore Center, Beit Djalah und Douban Dance Company, Jerusalem). 2017 gewährte der Kanton Zürich ihr einen Freiraum für einen einmonatigen Aufenthalt in Ramallah/Palästina. Darüber hinaus erhielt sie von der Stadt Zürich ein COVID-19-Stipendium, um an ihrem neuen Soloprojekt weiterzuarbeiten, das im Herbst 2022 entwickelt wird.
Für ihr letztes Engagement in der Schweiz (Juni 2022) wurde sie vom Opernhaus Zürich engagiert um für 16 Jugendliche der Integrationsklasse Viventa Zürich ein 20-minütiges Stück im Rahmen von #Angels zu choreografieren. Unmittelbar danach gewann sie eine künstlerische Residenz von Pro Helvetia, um für 4 Wochen in Ramallah/Palästina zu arbeiten. Während dieser Residenz arbeitete sie mit dem Filmregisseur Mohammed Alatar am künstlerischen Kurzfilm Suffocation. Gleich im Anschluss an die Residenz war sie zum ersten Mal Gast des Beirut Physical Lab und unterrichtete mehrere Workshops in Beirut. Kürzlich hat Mirjam eine Co-Produktion mit dem Ramallah Contemporary Dance Festival (RCDF) erhalten und kann ihre eigene Kreation im Juni 2023 aufführen.

Mirjam Sutter is a Zürich based freelance dancer, choreographer and pedagogue. After her formation as a teacher in the Ballet Center Gerda of Arb (Russian style, Vaganova) she moved to Genoa (Italy) and for three years was a member of the company Kaleidodanse among the former dancers of Redha Benteifour (Paris) Giovanna la Vecchia and Dario Greco. Back in Switzerland and while continuing working as a contemporary dancer, Mirjam studied Oriental Dance and for 7 years was a dancer of the company of the Egyptian Folklore Dance Group of Khaled Seif in Zürich. In 2016, Mirjam completed the AATEC - Formation by the Oriental Dance Artist Nesma Al-Andalus and graduated with a diploma.
Mirjam Sutter is an active advocate of perpetuating the traditional forms of oriental dance and in finding a contemporary dance language fusing modern techniques and Middle-Eastern and North African dance vocabulary which she transmits and publicizes in Switzerland and abroad through classes, intensive workshops and performances ( Aux Frontières 2007, En Mer 2011, Ben Ali Street 2012, The Dice Player 2013, Birds over no man's Land 2014, Entre Deux 2016, Entre Deux – Solo Version 2018). Her artistic interest is based not only on Middle Eastern culture but also on her own Swiss roots. In 2016 Mirjam collaborates with Elena Morena Weber to create Spuren , a piece inspired by Alpine Swiss winter rituals. This is followed by a collaboration with the Swiss Traditional Costume Association to innovate the Swiss folk dance.
Since 2010 Mirjam has regularly been invited to Palestine where she teaches various dance and theater groups in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip as well as leading artistic projects (Al-Harah Theater, Beit Djalah / Theater Day Production, Gaza City / El Funoun Dance Company, Ramallah / Baladi Folklore Center, Beit Djalah and Douban Dance Company, Jerusalem). In 2017, the Canton of Zürich granted Mirjam a Freiraum for a one-month residency in Ramallah/Palestine. Furthermore, she received from the City of Zurich an COVID 19 grant to continue to work on her new solo project that will be developed in autumn 2022.
Her latest engagement in Switzerland (June 2022) was by the Opera house of Zurich to choreograph for 16 youth people of the integration class of Zurich a 20 minutes’ piece in the frame of #Angels. Right after she won an artistic residency by Pro Helvetia to work for 4 weeks in Ramallah / Palestine. During this residency she collaborates with the Film Director Mohammed Alatar on an artistic dance clip “suffocation”. Most recently, she received a CO - Production with Ramallah Contemporary Dance Festival (RCDF) to present her own creation in June 2023
